The Kruger
National Park was established over 100 years ago
when the then President of the then Transvaal Republic, Paul Kruger, gave
the go-ahead to establish the game park in the Eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga).
The Kruger National Park today is one of the most exciting and highly acclaimed national parks in the world and is one of 20 national parks in South Africa. It stretches 350 km down the side of South Africa where it borders with Mozambique, starting from the Limpopo River, the northern border with Zimbabwe, down to the Crocodile River near Swaziland. From the Lebombo Mountains in the east to Phalaborwa in the west the park stretches 50 km. It's Big! (Click here to see a map of the Kruger National Park) Its conciderable size (approx. 20 000 sq. km. - roughly the size of Wales or Massachussetts, not including the bordering private game reserves and farms) covers diverse vegetation and climates - mountains, savannah, woodland and forest zones. In recent times the fences between the Kruger National Park and bordering private and provincial game reserves have been removed allowing for a greater movement of animals.
Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park:The establishment of a cross-border conservation area covering the Kruger National Park (South Africa), Gonarezhou (Zimbabwe) and the Limpopo National Park (Mozambique) has been approved to form a trans-national park. Size: With the three national parks together, the transfrontier park cover an area of 3 577 144 ha, which is 35 000 km². The area can be divided as follows – 58% South Africa, 24% Mozambique and 18% Zimbabwe. http://www.greatlimpopopark.com The Big 5: The African Big 5 - Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard are all found in the park as well as another 132 animal species - antelope, hyaena, giraffe, zebra and many more. The animal diversity also includes some 507 species of birds, 114 reptile, 33 amphibian and 49 fish species while approximately 300 tree species are represented in the park. The Kruger National Park is the eco-tourist's dream destination. Guided hikes in the company of game rangers can be arranged.
Game viewing:With over 2,300 km of tarred and gravel roads giving you access to water holes, picnic spots and viewing points the park and its animals are easily accessable to the tourst, using normal vehicles - although for better viewing I would recommend a Combi (mini-van). Accommodation: Accommodation in a number of rest camps are available, but booking is essential. Bordering the game reserve are a number of private game reserves and game farms, from luxurous (at $1000 per day it must be) to more affordable. Accommodations in guest houses, B & B's and lodges are also available. KubuKwena Golf Lodge offers you the opportunity to explore the Kruger National Park from Palaborwa

Lodge Accommodation ...Golf with a difference: Golfers playing on one of the golf courses that border, or are near the game reserve, are often treated to wildlife during their rounds, from warthog, baboons and hippo's to giraffe, and elephant. The animals are wild, and unfortunately there has been incidents where golfers didn't respect this and were injured or killed. More about the Hans Merensky Golf Course ...
